Guess what people hate? To be told that they aren't good enough; or that the mistakes in their lives have burned a permanent brand of "failure" on their ass which cannot ever be removed, no matter how good of a life that you have tried to live since your youth. Mitt Romney has reacted in a very similar way to the latter point with his comments on Barack Obama's admission that he once used alcohol, marijuana, and cocaine when he was a misguided youth. Amazing?! You mean there is a candidate who dared dabble in drug and drink when they were young and impressionable, perhaps even a bit misguided? Well, Obama says he did, and was, and he said this at a town hall at a Manchester, NH High School Tuesday, with more than a few impressionable high school types in the audience I am guessing.
Before I go too far, let's examine Romney's comments, posted at Fox News' Carl Cameron's "Cameron's Corner" blog - “It’s just not a good idea for people running for President of the
United States who potentially could be the role model for a lot of
people to talk about their personal failings while they were kids
because it opens the doorway to other kids thinking, ‘well I can do
that too and become President of the United States,’” Romney told an
Iowa audience today. “I think that was a huge error by Barack Obama…it
is just the wrong way for people who want to be the leader of the free
world.”
Okay, just a few words - "Are you fucking kidding me?!" Since Romney only speaks in evangelical and "what'll get me in good with the base" terms, I have to assume that this clown just looks at anyone who isn't a member of the glee, math, bible study, and Young Republicans clubs at their local high school as being lost causes. You know the type - the loner, the kid who wears all black, goes against the grain. Today, however, it is likely that you will be working for that kid when he starts his Internet company or social networking platform and makes millions of dollars. Not to mention that this kid is probably a lot more fun to hang around with - half joking - and because they actually made mistakes in the early part of their lives, they might just learn from them and not repeat them. This may actually make them better parents, bosses, teachers, and even politicians - whatever they want to become.
Become is the key word here folks, because we are all in a constant state of development and growth - except for Mr. Romney, who apparently has grown as far as he thinks that he needs to. That is good new for the rest of us, because now we can choose from the other candidates who are still learning, growing, and in touch with the rest of us substandard folks (if one such person actually exists, I mean we could vote for "none of the above"). Don't confuse this with "flip-flopping" or not having the courage of one's convictions - growth takes longer, like from the age 16 to the age of 45 or so, I am assuming that Mr. Obama had plenty of time to grow in that period, yes? Given Mr. Romney's comments, we can also assume that he would have his kids committed or locked in stocks in the basement if they dared to make an error in judgment like jaywalking or smoking a cigarette or taking a drink of beer at a party.
You know what? I'll bet that a lot of kids want no part of ever being a politician, let alone president - because they are worried that any mistakes that they make and subsequently (and honorably) admit to will be used as fodder by some nutpouch like Mitt Romney. They're saying, "fuck it, I think I will just go into business and take the payday over even thinking about a life of "public service" (c'mon, when can you remember any public service types who ran for office in the past 20 years? Thought so...).
You know what Mitt? You don't need to worry about any of these kids thinking they can take drugs, drink, and still become president. They don't want the job because then they would have to deal with some pompous assclown like you, and frankly, people have better things to do with their time. I can only imagine just how much fun the modern campaign looks to a high school student - being handicapped by a biased media before you even announce your intentions to run, having your entire life exposed to the world when you do enter the race, and then having some little Ivy-league campaign nitwit advising their candidate (your competition) to call you out on your former indiscretions (because we all know the candidates can't think for themselves) on the national stage. Sound like fun? Didn't think so.
No, the real fun is in pointing this shit out on your blog and laughing the candidates with the rest of the world. To the candidates - just tell yourselves that we're laughing with you, it makes it easier to get through the day. Congratulations Mr. Romney, you are a fraud!
Happy Thanksgiving!
Here is the whole scoop from Cameron's Corner, which we highly recommend as Carl Cameron is a solid reporter!
